Laboratory of Heating

The laboratory is equipped with model elements of heating installations, such as:

  • automated heat node,
  • stands for testing radiators and hydraulic balancing of installations,
  • stands for testing the compensation of thermal elongations of the installation,
  • automatic control valves of various types (pressure switch and thermostats),
  • exchangers, expansion vessels, etc.

The laboratory is equipped with measuring equipment enabling thermal tests of building partitions and thermal insulation of pipelines, such as; thermal imaging camera, heat flow meters.

The prepared activities, with the use of state-of-the-art technology, allow students to learn about the operation of central heating systems, methods of hydraulic balancing using balancing valves, sub-value valves and thermostatic valves. Students will become familiar with dedicated measuring devices for the verification of pressure drops and flows. Mounted rotameters allow direct assessment of changes in the settings of individual valve settings. Practical measurements of flow and pressure drops will also be carried out using a smartphone and a professional measuring device PFM 5000. The necessary equipment for the construction of the station for adjusting and balancing heating systems was provided by Danfoss, KAN-therm, IMI Hydronic Engineering and Grundfos, which have been cooperating with the I-62 Institute for years.

To power the station, in cooperation with the Lodz company Termokon, a two-function intermediate heat node equipped with the latest automatic adjustment devices was prepared. The ECL 310 controller and the circulation pump with adjustable rotor speed work with the model installation.

The heat substation, combined with a model heating installation, allows students of Environmental Engineering to get to know the principle of operation of a heat source powered from the heating network. Prepared laboratory exercises introduce the right dose of practical knowledge that can be used in future professional work. In addition, students check the theory in contact with devices found in modern heat nodes. They prepare to operate automation by implementing a reduction in the consumption of thermal energy in the preparation of domestic hot water and central heating.  The heating laboratory of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering is also provided for other courses within the Installations in Buildings field of study.
